As Goodyear celebrates its brand icon's anniversary, it is joining the Foundation for the Undefeated in celebrating the career start of former Louisville Cardinals tight end Gerald Christian, who was named Mr. After nearly 13 years of soaring high above Southern California, the Goodyear blimp "Spirit of America" will be retired in August —but not before it takes its final expedition. The finalist names were chosen based on criteria, including how the name reflects the history of airships, the majesty of lighter-than-air flight and Goodyear's track record of delivering superior performance and innovation.
The test flight is part of a comprehensive training program Goodyear pilots and crew will undergo over the next two months. The new blimp will officially be ready to begin travelling to cities around the United States after a formal christening ceremony this summer.
And even if the testing phase goes smoothly, the Aeroscraft may still face several challenges when it enters the market. A New York Times article about Aeros cites concerns from transportation analyst Richard Aboulafa, who points out the difficulty new air vehicles have in entering the market.
Perhaps the biggest problem, though, is the cost of fuel. In , rising helium costs were enough to bankrupt a tourist airship company in Northern California. All this raises questions about whether a form of transport dependent on it could ever, well, get off the ground. But Pasternak and his team remain optimistic. Without any further issues, the Aeroscraft will be up for certification by the FAA in It might not bring back the glory days of transatlantic zeppelins — but it might at least prove that airships can be more than floating billboards.

The ship's pilot was killed; the three passengers, all journalists, survived the crash. Goodyear operates its own blimps in the United States. That's a one-time expense, however. After that, the blimp will need only occasional refills in the event of minor leaks.
The initial fill is generally considered part of the construction cost, and despite that most airships are cheaper to buy than conventional aircraft of a similar payload. To live up there it should be buoyant all the time, not hybrid.
In order to live in an airship, it is necessary or more safe to have a rigid airships like the old zeppelins, in those case the surface envelope weight — volume buoyancy ratio makes rigid airship more suitable for big scales.
The general consensus is that there are between 20 and 25 blimps in the world today, but most of them are not in operation. Van Wagner Airship Group owns and operates eight of the approximately 13 active advertising blimps in the world including the MetLife Blimps.
The airship's total volume is 8, m 3 , and is filled with non-flammable helium. The Goodyear Blimp is powered by three hp engines, thus producing a similar total power output to the Goodyear-equipped LMP2 race cars competing at Le Mans.
Most large modern airships only divide the envelope into three main compartments - two are filled with air called "ballonets" and a large one filled with helium. How long can an airship stay aloft? Goodyear said it also plans to upgrade the facilities at its Airship Operations base in Carson, California, which is near LA and will house Wingfoot Two by the end of the year.
The improvements include an inflatable hangar that will be built out of 73 miles of partially translucent polyester fabric and will be almost nine stories tall and longer than a football field. Construction is expected to be completed in seven months and erected on the property in July.
Thereafter, Wingfoot Two will begin its cross-country journey — making stops along the way, naturally. Additional facilities updates will include an enlarged mooring circle for ground handling, a new masting system and a new maintenance building. Marketing can change the world. Register The Drum Plus.
