Other researchers recently revealed in Psychological Science that objects are categorized as soon as they are perceived; something similar, Willis and Todorov suggest, may be true of certain trait judgments.

It may be that, to impress a prospective employer with your competence and trustworthiness, or a prospective mate with your attractiveness, you can do it in, well, no time. That may be a good or bad thing, depending.

Great article. Sure, we organize what see very quickly into categories or types. But, in my opinion, persons are fools if they think know who somebody is based those initial few seconds that are only visual. Thank you for alerting us to take care of the first impression to influence people think positively about us. On the other hand it is an eye opener not to read the book by its cover.

Likely a glut is the cause of the time being so short because if necessity required them to work together, they would stay together. The article seemed to show the face was the main factor. I was taught that the breasts, hip and overall appearance also is part of a first impression of a woman by a man.

Do these factors come into play? I also, that the breasts are developed, unlike other mammals, stay large and do not shrink to a male like size as it is also part of the brain making the first impression. Woman have other things, as height, weight, hair, their brains use when making their first impression of a male; am I wrong? People many times can be like reading an open book…while others are better at concealing their agenda. Everything you think…say…and do is a seed.

Every seed produces a specific harvest. Let choose our relationships carefully- we become who we hang around with.

If people perceive you from a first impression, then they are shallow! This person you judge, may be having a bad day, stressed, not feeling well, or just not at their best… Logical or not? Fascinating, I wonder if this is related to survival — that this evolved from needing to instantly assess friend or threat.

Any sign of dirt or disorganization may turn customers away from your store, even if everything else about your offer is strong. Make sure the inside of your store is as clean as possible, and spend time organizing and cleaning the outside of it as well by washing the windows, cleaning the sidewalk, and keeping your parking lot in order.

In cluttered or dingy stores, people assume that if the business owner doesn't care, why should they? Note what draws your eye in when you're walking or driving by, and try to replicate the details that fit your brand.

A friend of mine owns a boutique that sells women's clothing that's unique and appealing, but she found that the idea of a "boutique" scared off some customers squarely in her demographic. To showcase the attractive appearance and price of her wares, she added an alcove near the front entrance that enabled people to view some of the clothing without entering — but many more walked in after spying some of the clothes outside. If your business exists primarily in a digital environment, your website will be your main source of first impressions.

A concise tagline or headline at the top of your site should let customers know exactly what they can expect from the rest of your content. Include photos and videos that evoke a feeling. Those 50 milliseconds may not be long enough to guarantee even a tagline will be read; instead, convey emotions and the power of your brand through photos and videos.

One entrepreneur I know showcased his business's dedication to the environment by displaying photos of his team volunteering at a national park alongside pictures of the brand's eco-friendly products. You notice her clothes. She takes large strides and walks fast.

You can imagine her being the leader of a large office and living in a big house. Her clothes looked expensive and she was well groomed. This led you to think she was successful and wealthy. You looked at her body language. She took large strides and walked fast.

This led you to think she was confident, powerful, and determined to get where she wanted to go. You made assumptions about other areas of her life such as her job and her lifestyle. Based on her clothes and body language, you thought she must have a high-powered job, be in charge of a large office, and live in a large house. From the few seconds you saw this woman, you formed a first impression filter.

So if you bump into this woman again at your local coffee shop, everything you see or hear about her will be filtered through the first impression you just formed. When you meet somebody for the first time, you immediately start taking in and processing information about them.
