We had over 80 days of shooting for 6 x 30 episodes and were filming well into winter. It was a lot easier for Off Their Rockers because the show never created victims from the pranks and most people saw the funny side of what we were doing.
I also think that, as nowadays people have minicams on their phones, why would an audience need me to direct when they can shoot their own pranks?
A lot of the humour in Off Their Rockers was based on very simple, everyday coincidences. How did you make it funny? Sounds morbid, right? But we put her in comical, very simple, everyday life situations, like in a pub or fishmongers. It is the extreme of emotions that makes it funny. Those are the gold dust moments that show the real humanity of everyday people. My favourite part was seeing people enjoying themselves interacting with our cast.
For example, watching people jump out of their skin then nearly wet themselves laughing was great fun when we were shooting the nun on a mobility scooter sketches. Of course, the real stars are the cast, who are all over seventy years old. If you think about it, would your granny or grandpa be prepared to do these types of stunts over and over again? They really are troopers and I have the utmost respect for them.

There are naked old men and women who fart a lot. There isn't really a point to any of it. But still, even though Off Their Rockers is a silly and surprisingly warmhearted hidden-camera show, the fact remains that it's still a hidden-camera show. As such, what came off as inventive last week — the farting lady, the swearing nun — was repeated beat for beat last night.
It's Joly's big telephone all over again, amusing at first but worn into the ground with such aggressive repetition that it soon legitimately becomes the least funny thing in the entire universe. And these things are only funny once. The Scare Tactics prank was only funny because a screaming red demon didn't shoot out of someone's vagina every week. The same goes for the sketch with the haunted girl in the lift.
As silly as Off Their Rockers was, it still doesn't change anything. Hidden camera shows are the worst.
